DeYor Performing Arts Center – home of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra – features the historic Edward W. Powers Auditorium and the Eleanor Beecher Flad Pavilion (which includes Ford Family Recital Hall). The 600-seat Ford Family Recital Hall features cutting-edge acoustics for the presentation of live orchestral music, musical ensembles and choral productions.
Edward W. Powers Auditorium was originally constructed by the Warner Brothers in 1931. The four brothers, Harry, Jack, Albert and Sam, lived in Youngstown before they went to Hollywood to make their fortune. When brother Sam died in 1927, the three brothers decided to build “the finest movie theatre ever built” in their adopted hometown as a tribute to Sam, who is credited with obtaining the technology that allowed Warner Bros. to produce the first feature-length talking picture. Harry, Jack and Albert spared no expense in this memorial to their brother, constructing the building with only the finest imported materials that cost $1.5 million in total (equivalent to about $27 million when adjusted to today’s purchasing power). Today, The Youngstown Symphony presents a full schedule of Masterworks and Pops concerts, and traveling shows and theatrical productions allow visitors to be entertained surrounded by cinema house opulence of a bygone era.

The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra
For close to 100 years, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra has been bringing its classical sound to downtown Youngstown. Originally named “The Little Youngstown Symphony,” YSO was started by the brother-conductor duo Michael and Carmine Ficocelli. As the group’s popularity grew, “Little” was dropped from its name and it is now recognized as a “symphony orchestra” – a large group of musicians organized to play in concert halls.
The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra has performed at Edward W. Powers Auditorium since its first performance on September 20, 1969. Today, the Orchestra is focused on preserving the history of the Youngstown Symphony Society and preparing for future growth.
