The lecture, Cosmic Train Wrecks: When Galaxies Collide, will be presented by Dr. Jillian Scudder, Oberlin College. Galaxies are not always solitary islands in a mostly-empty Universe – occasionally they find themselves with close neighbors. When the neighbors are close enough, gravity promises us a cosmic smash-up, with the two galaxies flung around each other to form a new galaxy. This process provides some of the most photogenic images, but what can we learn from this process? Dr. Scudder will discuss how we search for these collisions between galaxies, how this collision changes the galaxies involved, and what we still hope to learn.

Limited street parking is available on Lincoln, Phelps, Hazel, and Wood Streets. Parking is also available in the Wick Ave. parking deck (M1) for a fee of $5.00, or free with a YSU parking permit. Visitors should park on the 4th floor of the deck and use the pedestrian bridge to campus. From the campus end of the pedestrian bridge, turn left as you pass the library and use the sidewalk to the Ward Beecher Planetarium. There is a small handicap lot located between Jones Hall & Ward Beecher Hall.
