Seventy area middle and high school students in the YSU Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Michael S. Butler, Music Director and Richard Smrek, Associate Music Director, will perform their spring concert on Monday, May 9, at 7:30pm at Stambaugh Auditorium. Ticket prices are $5, or free for children under 12 and those with a valid YSU ID, and are available at www.stambaughauditorium.com or at the door.
Formerly the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra, the group is open to students ages 13-18 by audition, and is now sponsored and supported by the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and the Dana School of Music. The repertoire includes Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppé; Chorale and Fiddle Tune by Larry Tuttle; Concertino by Cécile Chaminade featuring soloist Laura Bowden, flute; and the fourth movement from Symphony No. 2 “The Little Russian” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Graduating seniors will be recognized during the program and include Natalie Alfera, Laurel HS; Suzanne Bevilaqua, Wilmington Area HS; Laura Bowden, Laurel HS; Jaden Boyer, Laurel HS; Victoria Colovos, Boardman HS; Alexander DePinto, Boardman HS; Lili DiMuzio, Boardman HS; Sydney DiRuscia, Blackhawk HS; Catherine Esper, Canfield HS; Sarah Graham, Grove City Area HS; John Heino, Canfield HS; David Krull, New castle HS; Anthony Meranto, Canfield HS; Lydia Noble, Poland Seminary HS; Benjamin Piper, Boardman HS; Lauren Roberts, Howland HS; Julia Sansoterra, Canfield HS; Kyle Schafer, Austintown Fitch HS; Jacob Sizer, New Castle HS; Christopher Smallwood, Canfield HS; and Tyler Tatar, Springfield Local HS.
Featured soloist, Laura Bowden, is a senior at Laurel High School in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Laura began music lessons at the age of seven, and began playing flute at 10 years old. She continued her flute/piccolo lessons with Stacey Steele of Slippery Rock and Lisa Meyerhoffer of the Omaha Symphony and Chattanooga Symphony & Opera. Laura has played in the Youngstown State University Youth Orchestra for three years and the Stambaugh Youth Concert Band for two years, for which she is principal flutist for both this year. She is a member of her high school concert band, jazz band, two-year drum major for her marching band, and choir. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.
