Featuring members of the Dana Opera Ensemble, L’amico Fritz is a romantic comedy opera representing the lighter side of 19th century verismo drama that includes both Italian “opera buffo” and “opera seria.” Premiering in 1891, with the libretto by P. Suardon, the opera is based on the French novel L’ami Fritz by Émile Erckmann and Pierre-Alexandre Chatrian.
This delightful opera is set in a small province where Fritz is the local benefactor whose generosity provides for its town’s orphans, wedding dowries, employment for many and even entertains his many friends. He has but one potential misgiving, he is a bachelor and seems to be stayed in his determination to remain so. However, the town’s rabbi and his friend, David has other designs in mind for Fritz.
The production’s guest staging director is Dr. Todd Ranney, Professor of Voice and Opera at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Technical staff includes Technical Director, Ryan Fitzpatrick; Lighting Designer, James Oakry and Properties Designer, Marlina Karimi, graduate assistant. Kathryn Davison Miller is the Collaborative Pianist.
The cast includes Emilio Santiago, Marlina Karimi, Jaelynn Mack, Alexander Kluchar and Austin Angus. The roles of David and Caterina are double cast, with Christian Thompson (4/22 & 4/24) and Joseph Atkinson (4/23) as David and Alexa Mosca (4/22 & 4/24) and Maria Anastasiades (4/23) as Caterina.
