Bites and Bits of History: Quack Medicines
Thursday, June 15 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Milk transfusions, smoking cigarettes to cure asthma, giving alcohol and morphine to a baby for teething, taking cocaine to cure allergies…these are just a few of the “quack” medical ideas that were used during the Victorian Era. Thankfully, our government stepped in to develop regulations against these types of medical practices.
Join the Mahoning Valley Historical Society on June 15, at noon at the Tyler History Center for Bites and Bits of History, to learn more about “Victorian Quack Medicine and the Birth of the FDA” presented by Cassie Nespor, curator of Melnick Medical Museums. This presentation covers some popular patent medicines and home health devices used at the turn of the 20th century and the federal government’s efforts to regulate them. Many of these issues are still being discussed in health care today.
Bring your lunch and join us in the Tyler History Center’s Thomas Ballroom for this free educational event. Bites and Bits of History Lunchtime programs are sponsored by the John and Loretta Hynes Foundation.
