Antigone

University Theatre concludes its 59th season with “Antigone” opening for two weekends on Friday, March 31, at 7:30pm in YSU’s Ford Theater at Bliss Hall.

Directed by Todd Dicken, “Antigone,” written by Jean Anouilh, is based on the original play by Sophocles. Anouilh’s “Antigone” is an adaptation of Sophocles’ tragic play of the same title. Written in 1942, during the German occupation of France, the play was first performed in Paris at the Théâtre de l’Atelier on February 6, 1944, under Nazi censorship. The story revolves around the conflict between the idealist Antigone and her rigid uncle, Creon, over the proper burial of Antigone’s brother, Polynices. The play was also interpreted to represent the French Resistance movement’s struggle against the Vichy government’s forces during the height of the Nazi occupation.

YSU’s Theatre Production of Antigone is a modern interpretative look at the universal themes of idealism, totalitarianism, and political heroism, as well as the aftermath of war and the trail of victims left behind. The time period is contemporary, with a non-representational, utilitarian set. Although fantasy-like, the costumes nod to Corsican/Ukrainian roots while wearing Greek-style half-masks. The three chorus members who represent the voice of societal “uber-gods” are accessorized with slightly larger-than-life stick puppets. Projections are inserted throughout the production with images from the ancient past through present conflicts. “Although the play tackles heady subject matter, there are also very tender moments and even a few skillfully inserted scenes of comic levity, allowing the audience to hopefully leave the theater with robust discussions on myriad life topics,” said Director Todd Dicken.

The show’s run is scheduled for March 31 – April 8 in YSU Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30pm, while the Sunday, April 2 matinee performance starts at 2:00pm. All seats are general admission. Adult tickets are $16. Special rate tickets are $9 for non-YSU students, YSU alums, senior citizens, Penguin Club members, and groups of eight (8) or more. YSU students, YSU faculty, and staff are free with a valid ID. To purchase show tickets, call 330-941-3105 or go to www.ysu.tix.com.
