The holiday season is now in full swing, and with it comes countless traditions- Gingerbread houses, tree decorating, and most importantly, outdoor light displays. Since the first display in 1880, Christmas lights have become one of the most widely participated holiday traditions, and Mahoning County is no exception when it comes to displays!
Mahoning County ‘Tour of Lights’
Since 2006, Mahoning County has experienced some of the best community light displays, including Canfield’s Christmas Lights. Coordinated by Mike McAndrew, Canfield Christmas Lights is an animated light display that spans across three neighborhoods on Fairview Ave, Indian Lake Blvd and Hood Dr. Not only are the displays beautiful to look at, the lights are also synchronized to music, streaming through 107.7 FM. Canfield’s Christmas Lights is also part of the larger “Tour of Lights” display in Mahoning County.
As you prepare for the busy holiday season, so do the parks of Mahoning County! On Sunday, December 3, join the Boardman community at Boardman Park’s 21st Annual Community Christmas, beginning at 4pm. The park encourages visitors to decorate the pine trees, mingle with Santa, listen to Christmas music and, best of all, witness the Christmas tree lighting at 4:45pm! After this event, the lights will be on display through January 7, 6:00-10:00pm for families to enjoy, free, in a drive through the park.
Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek MetroParks
Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek MetroParks will also be joining the holiday fun with their Winter Celebration Nights. During Saturdays in December, Winter Celebration: Toyland at Fellows Riverside Gardens is open late until 7pm. Visitors can experience the outdoor light display, near the Davis Center, and the Toy Workshop and Reindeer Games. Plus, find that perfect gift at the Shop in the Gardens and savor refreshments available for purchase in the Garden Café.
The annual Youngstown Holiday Parade & Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, December 1, from 5:00pm-8:00pm in Downtown Youngstown. Festivities include the parade, Christmas Tree lighting and Santa’s arrival, Youngstown Flea Holiday Flea Market, “Dueling Piano’s” at Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, free admission to OH WOW! Children’s Center, and the Youngstown Phantoms hockey game at the Covelli Centre. Following the parade, the lights will be on display in Central Square.
The Joy of Christmas Holiday Light Show is another amazing annual display that takes place at Firestone Park in nearby Columbiana. Drive through 75 animated holiday light scenes, with over one million lights. Stop by Santa’s Ice Castle for Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, live holiday music, crafts, face-painting, and Pictures with Santa! The drive through holiday light display is open November 30, December 1-3, and December 7-26, from 6:00-9:00pm. $10 donation per vehicle requested at admission.
