With the weather warming up, there are endless opportunities for places to go and things to see in the Youngstown area! Here are just a few things that you and your family can do before and after the Commencement ceremony:

  • Fellows Riverside Gardens: By May 6, the twelve acres of flowers at Fellows Riverside Gardens should be blooming beautifully. This magnificent display garden is not only a great place to explore in your downtime, but also offers the best scenery for post-graduation pictures with the whole family!
  • McDonough Museum of Art: Functioning as a center for contemporary art, the McDonough Museum of Art will be featuring the Spring Graduating BFA Exhibition while you are in town! Visit to see the work of YSU students that will be graduating this May with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree.
  • OH WOW! Children’s Center for Science & Technology: Are you bringing little ones that you know won’t sit still through the entire Commencement ceremony? Tire them out beforehand at Youngstown’s OH WOW! Children’s Center where kids can explore interactive exhibits rooted in science, technology, engineering and math.

  • Pressed Coffee Bar and Eatery: If you’re looking for a quaint and comfortable place to enjoy breakfast and a coffee, then Pressed is the place for you! With great service and even greater food, this shop is located right next to Youngstown State and should definitely be visited.
  • Avalon Downtown Pizzeria: With all of the pizza places in Youngstown it might be hard to choose just one, but you won’t have trouble anymore after trying the Avalon located in downtown Youngstown! Known for their famous homemade pizza, “the Av” has everything from traditional cheese pizza to fried butterfly shrimp, all made to order.
  • The Federal: For a great place to take your recent graduate, visit The Federal, a local Youngstown burger joint that serves over 13 specialty burgers and also includes a Burger Bar where customers can create exactly what they want!
